In the family’s Ohio home last week, a 2-year-old who reportedly discovered his father’s rifle in a drawer accidently killed his eight-months-pregnant mother, according to authorities.
Laura Ilg, 31, hurriedly dialed 911 after being shot, saying the child had unintentionally pressed the trigger and shot her in the back, according to WOIO.
Officers had to force through the front door of the Norwalk house in order to find the gravely wounded mother, who was 33 weeks pregnant, and her little son.
Police Chief David Smith said Tuesday that despite physicians performing an emergency cesarean after she was taken to Fisher-Titus Medical Center, the unborn child did not survive.
A few hours later, lg passed away from gunshot wounds.
The weapon, which belonged to Ilg’s husband, Alek Ilg, according to the police, was typically stored on a nightstand close to the couple’s bed.
Before she died, the mother told police that there were many baby gates installed throughout the house to keep the youngster from wandering out unaccompanied and that the bedroom door was frequently shut.
One of the baby gates that is always locked was allegedly left open, according to the police.
Ilg said that her kid entered the bedroom unintentionally while she was washing laundry and immediately began playing with the rifle.
She admitted to police that when she was unexpectedly shot in the back, she was unaware that the little child even possessed a gun. In the wake of the incident, her husband, who was at work when the shooting occurred, wrote a Facebook tribute to his wife and son who had died.
“If you haven’t heard, Laura and our unborn son Talisen passed away Friday. There are no words for the pain and loss I feel,” he wrote.
“She was, is, and will always be, the love of my life.” Police reported that the father is taking care of the couple’s surviving son.
