In Texas in 2014, doctors told George Pickering that his son was dead. The 27-year-old had suffered a massive stroke and was on life support, but his brain had not shown signs of activity for 24 hours. So the decision was made to disconnect the patient from the machine.
In response, the man pulled out a gun and threatened the hospital staff and ordered them not to do so.
For three hours the police persuaded George to let the hostages go and come out. The man held his son’s hand the entire time and had no intention of surrendering, claiming he was alive.
And at one point, his son squeezed his father’s hand. Doctors realized that there was still brain activity and the boy could be saved.
George voluntarily surrendered to police and was sentenced to 11 months in prison. And his son made a full recovery
