The study describes the case of a 48-year-old man who was bitten by a street cat several years ago, apparently after he wanted to pet it.
Just eight hours after the bite, the man’s hands swelled to the point where he went to the emergency room. The vaccinations and antibiotics given did little to help, so doctors had to cut away the damaged skin around the wounds.
Tests showed that the swelling of his hands and the extensive infection was caused by a previously unknown bacterium.
