In South Africa, a girl took a DNA test and found out she grew up in foster care
A resident of Cape Town, South Africa, who was abducted at birth, has found her birth family thanks to a DNA test.
Michie Zephanie Sheldon was raised from birth by spouses Lavona and Michael Solomon. At the age of 17, she met a girl named Cassidy at school who looked a lot like her. School social workers at the school, who noticed the students’ similar appearance, suggested that Michie take a DNA test.
The results of the test showed that Cassidy was her biological sister. Mitchie also learned that Lavona and Michael were her adoptive parents. She soon found out that she had been abducted at birth. Her adoptive parents were having trouble having children of their own, so Lavona decided to steal the newborn baby from the hospital. When Mitchie was only three days old, Lavona, disguised as a nurse, kidnapped her from the maternity ward. Michi, after learning the truth, stopped communicating with the mother who raised her. Despite this, she does not hold a grudge against Lavona and does not consider her a criminal.
After some time, Michie decided to meet her biological parents. “There wasn’t that connection. It was extremely difficult because I grew up thinking I had a different family,” she recalls. Nevertheless, she gradually built a relationship with her birth father and mother.
She has since dreamed of having both her fathers walk her down the aisle during her wedding. Michi’s dream came true when she got married in March 2023. “It was a miracle! The relationship between my two families is improving. They get along now. We have all grown up, realized that we are human beings, and have finally come to terms with what happened. We respect and understand each other,” she says.
