In New Zealand, a girl complained of a hangover and found out she had cancer
In April 2022, then 19-year-old model Poppy Begley noticed that she was experiencing strange symptoms after parties during which she consumed alcohol. The girl was getting sore noses and rashes on her face, as well as vomiting. “If I drank alcohol, already after two drinks I felt much more drunk than most of my peers. And after three or four drinks, I was getting really sick,” she recalled.
Begley said that due to her body’s strange reaction to alcohol, she was hospitalized three times after parties. Doctors suggested that the girl might have deep vein thrombosis, a pathological condition characterized by the formation of blood clots in deep veins. Begley was prescribed treatment, but her condition did not improve. In December 2022, she developed pain in her neck. The worried girl sought medical help and after examinations learned that she had a six-centimeter tumor in her chest and the third stage of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.
The girl admitted that she was overjoyed when she was finally diagnosed correctly. However, Begley had a hard time accepting that she would lose her hair, eyelashes and eyebrows as a result of her chemotherapy treatment. The girl was treated for four months, one of which she spent in the hospital after she had a severe and rare reaction to a blood transfusion. Because of this, she suffered unbearable bone pain and took large amounts of painkillers, which disrupted the normal functioning of her stomach and intestines. Begley’s weight dropped to 35 pounds and she was forced to eat through a gastrostomy tube. “It was the only time I truly feared for my life,” she says.
Despite her fears, thanks to treatment, the girl went into remission and got her life back on track. She said that she used to take many things for granted, but now she enjoys even the little things.
